The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th Chinese lunar month, one of the most popular traditional festivals in China. It was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2009, boasting thousands of years of traditional Chinese folk customs and midsummer cultural traditions.
Originating from ancient midsummer rituals to prevent seasonal illnesses and pray for wellness, the festival is now widely celebrated in memory of Qu Yuan, a noble and patriotic poet of ancient China.
Traditional Festival Customs
- Zongzi: Steamed glutinous rice wrapped with fresh Reed Leaves, the signature traditional food of the festival;
- Dragon Boat Race: A classic team rowing event that represents teamwork and perseverance;
- Hang Wormwood & Calamus: Fragrant green plants hung at doorways to purify air and bless family health;
- Herb Sachets & Colorful Bracelets: Traditional decorative ornaments with good wishes for safety and health in midsummer.
